All / Haircare

Lately my hair has been playing up! I’m still experiencing some shedding and breakage though weirdly enough mainly when I air dry my hair. After reading this post by Nadege, I realised that the problem might be my scalp as opposed to my hair itself. I’ve noticed that every time I deep condition lately, no matter what conditioner I use, my scalp tingles and itches and not in a good way. I’m not sure if it’s an allergic reaction or my scalp has decided to bail on me but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I’m also shedding. As a result I’ve decided to postpone my kinky twists so I can deal with the scalp issues.

Once again I’m using a two-pronged attack to deal with this problem. The first part is from a product perspective. Other than Henna and JBCO, I don’t usually use any products which deal with shedding or the scalp specifically but all that’s about to change. After doing some research I came across the Komaza Care product line, it’s a natural range of products which is targeted specifically for black hair. I love their products because every single ingredient they use is something I’m familiar with and would also totally use. For my scalp and shedding, I’m going with the Honeycomb Rejuvenator and the Moku Pre Shampoo Treatment. Both are designed to deal with shedding and help promote a healthy scalp.

The second part of my assault deals with the physical state of my hair. I think I am manipulating my hair way too much, which is partly why I was going to go into a protective style. Though I’m nixing the kinky twists, I still need to reduce the stress I put on my hair but at the same time retain access to my scalp. Thus I decided to canerow my hair……MYSELF!! This is a big deal y’all as I DO NOT braid hair, it’s just never been my forte. As part of my hair course I’ve been learning to braid so I decided to bite the bullet and use myself as a practice model. It took forever to do, and my arms still ache but all in all I’m rather pleased with the results. I’m hoping they’ll get neater the more I do them.

In conclusion, my regimen for the foreseeable future will consist of the following:

  • Honeycomb Rejuvenator applied to hair daily
  • Moku Pre Shampoo Treatment applied to hair weekly
  • JBCO applied to scalp daily
  • Seal canerow with coconut oil every other day
  • Ayurvedic rinse fortnightly (I’m going no poo!)
  • Re-braid hair fortnightly

Good job braiding!!!! It looks good, I'd NEVER be able to achieve that look!

And I know sometimes it's easy to forget that the health of our scalp is directly related to the health of our hair!! I'm glad you were able to recognize the problem and are working on a solution!
